Equipped with low-emission engines
HEINZMANN, one of the few manufacturers of classified gas engine controls in the world, has joined forces with engine specialist MAN Rollo B.V. and engine manufacturer MAN Engines to redefine the limits of what is technically feasible and shift the standards. By 2025, the innovative cooperation with MAN Engines and MAN Rollo will see 40 ships equipped with low-emission engines and put into service as part of the Parsival project.
The challenge
The reduction of emissions can only be achieved through the interaction of many components based on the outstanding engineering achievements of all partners. Shipping is the backbone of global goods handling. More than two thirds of the world's total freight volume is transported by ship via waterways in containers, as bulk cargo or in tanks. Shipbuilders and shipping companies are aware of their responsibility and are actively looking for solutions to make the transport of goods more climate-friendly.
The solution
One possible way forward: sustainable engines that combine high performance with low-emission operation. The Parsifal project is realising this solution. The technology developed in the Parsifal project has already proven its suitability for everyday use: The MV ‘Helgoland’, which has been transporting people and goods between its home port of Cuxhaven and the German North Sea island since 2015, is supported by three gas-powered auxiliary gensets, each with an output of 480 kW. In 2018, the ship, which was built in Germany, was awarded the Blue Angel for its low-emission motorisation. In the same year, the dredging vessel ‘Werkendam’, which runs exclusively on LNG, is launched in Hardinxveld-Giessendam in the Netherlands. The Parsifal project will help shape the future of shipping. Transporting goods by water will become more climate-friendly.
